Hello! It has been a long time since I last wrote a review and honestly I was feeling bad for that! Here goes the review of a book I finished reading months ago, The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks. It's a book that was published in 2008, after a year's pause on writing. My review is spoiler free in therms of action, though I describe the characters, but not what happens to them, only events that you notice since you begin to read.
Olá! Já há muito que não escrevia reviews e honestamente estava a sentir-me mal por isso! Aqui vai a review de um livro que já acabei de ler há uns meses, Um Homem com Sorte de Nicholas Sparks. É um livro que surge em 2008, depois de o autor ter feito uma pausa de um ano. A minha review é spoiler free acerca da ação, embora eu descreva personagens, mas não o que lhes acontece, apenas situações que já encontram no início da leitura.
Plot
The plot is very unique and singular, though it is full of contextual factors that are relatively easy to find on other stories. Meaning, this plot is unique because it shows the story a of a man that spends time fighting in a war and doesn't suffer too much from accidents (even though the book says he's a lucky man because he did not dies, I think he suffers a lot because he watches friends dying) and he's a man that cross the country to find a woman that's on a photo he finds in Iraq. What this plot has that is very mundane: it has a dominant male who bullies others and controls his ex-wife's life; a young and pretty woman who has no luck in love after divorcing his husband; a father who wants his son to follow a career on sports; an intellectual son; a father who doesn't understand his son and a wonderful stepfather. In my opinion it's not the plot that makes this book good but it has the amazing detail of the photograph that gives birth to the whole story and the fate that carries along with it, it's just a shame that this book has so many American stereotypes.
O plot é bastante singular e único, embora repleto de fatores contextuais relativamente comuns. Ou seja, o plot é único porque conta a história de um homem que atravessa uma guerra sem sofrer grandes acidentes (e apesar de no livro se dizer que ele é um homem cheio de sorte por sobreviver, eu acho que ele passa por maus bocados ao ver os seus amigos e companheiros morrerem à frente dele) e é um homem que atravessa o país a pé em busca de uma mulher de uma foto que encontrou no Iraque. O que este plot tem de mundano e comum: homem dominador, que exerce bullying sobre os outros e controla a vida da ex-mulher; mulher jovem e bonita que após se divorciar do pai do filho não consegue ser bem-sucedida na vida amorosa; pai que quer um filho desportista; filho intelectual; pai incompreensível e padrasto maravilhoso. No meu veredicto, não é o plot que faz o livro ser bom, mas tem o pormenor fantástico da fotografia ser o que despoleta toda a história e o destino que acarreta, é pena haver tantos estereótipos à maneira estadounidense.

Personagens
I think the book is very good thanks to the characters and it is due to them that you have the wish to keep reading. Even though there are some stereotypes which I told about earlier, since we get to know the character's thoughts, they get more complex and we understand better their points of view.
Acho que é nesta questão que o livro soma pontos e que o torna um bom livro e que dá vontade de ler. Apesar dos estereótipos já falados anteriormente, como podemos conhecer o pensamento das personagens, estas adensam-se e compreendemos melhor os pontos de vista.
Beth
Beth is shown as a fragile human being, even though she has to be strong for her son. She's a teacher, so she supports Ben's taste for music and mental activities. She is beautiful but insecure. She suffers because life it's not like the way it should be for her but she takes the best out of it. She's naive and family is her strongest support and the thing she protects most. She is a character made with realism, given her circumstances, but I think she's too naive for a realistic character. She needs to be naive for story, that's it. You feel sorry for her, you feel like you want to help her, it's a main character that you like but also feel like she needs you. I was reading and at certain points I felt like I wanted to help her, even though books can't ear me! It's the fragile woman that you see a lot in love stories, but she's original in the sense that she is the woman of the photograph and she is a lucky charm.
Beth é ilustrada como um ser humano frágil, apesar de ser forte para o filho. É professora, por isso apoia o gosto por música e atividades mentais de Ben. Ela é bonita e insegura. Ela sofre porque a vida não está como devia estar mas ela aproveita o melhor que pode. Ela é ingénua e a família é o seu maior suporte e a coisa que ela protege mais. Ela é uma personagem feita com realismo, dadas as circunstâncias, mas eu acho que ela é demasiado ingénua para uma personagem realista. Ela precisa de ser ingénua para o plot, é isso. Sentimo-nos com pena dela, com vontade de a ajudar, é uma personagem principal de quem gostamos para que sentimos que precisa de nós. Enquanto eu lia eu senti necessidade de a ajudar, apesar de os livros não me ouvirem! É o tipo de mulher frágil que se encontra facilmente em histórias de amor, mas esta personagem é original no sentido em que é a mulher da fotografia e um amuleto de sorte.
Thibault
Thibault is an enigma. You get to know so few about his past and his motives and I felt that he was the main character less explored. Of course you know so much about the war and the journey he made across the country, but you know almost nothing about his dreams, what he wants in life. He's the kind of man that you easily find in love stories because he's strong, he fights for the ones he love, he's gentle, kind, he loves kids. He's almost perfect. What makes him different from other main characters like that is the story behind the photograph. And he crosses a country just because of a photo! Besides that, he's similar to others characters from other stories. And he's so humble that you can't avoid liking him.

Claro que ficamos a saber do passado na guerra e da viagem pelo país, mas não sabemos quase nada sobre sonhos, expectativas, o que ele quer na vida. É o tipo de personagem que se encontra facilmente numa história de amor porque é forte, ele luta por quem ama, é gentil, amável, ele adora crianças. Ele é quase perfeito. O que o torna diferente das outras personagens como ele é a foto. E ele atravessa o país devido a uma foto! Tirando isso, ele é semelhante a outras personagens de outras histórias. E ele é tão humilde que não se consegue evitar gostar dele.
Thibault is an enigma. You get to know so few about his past and his motives and I felt that he was the main character less explored. O que o torna diferente das outras personagens como ele é a foto. E ele atravessa o país devido a uma foto! Tirando isso, ele é semelhante a outras personagens de outras histórias. E ele é tão humilde que não se consegue evitar gostar dele.
Keith
Keith is the character full of stereotypes. I'm not even gonna tell much about him, if you read the novel you can easily identify the American stereotypes that make Keith who he is. I like the way this character happens to be in the end. He was made for you to hate, I mean, even though you enter his mind and you see things the way he feels and thinks about them, I believe Sparks wrote in a way that makes you feel unfriendly about him. But like I said, in the end of the novel I kinda felt sorry for him and I felt bad for hating him. But seriously, that's a genius touch by Sparks.
Keith é uma personagem repleta de esterótipos. Nem vou falar muito dele, se lerem o livro podem identificar com facilidade os estereótipos de que já falei que o tornam no Keith que é. Eu gosto da maneira como a personagem está e se sente no fim da história. Ele foi criado para ser odiado, ou seja,apesar de entrarmos na mente dele e vermos as coisas da maneira como ele sente e pensa, eu acredito que o Nicholas Sparks escreveu este personagem de maneira a que sentíssemos inimizade por ele. Mas tal como disse, no final da história eu até senti pena dele e senti-me mal por tê-lo odiado. Mas isso foi um toque de génio do Sparks.
Nana
Nana can look like sometimes a fairytale character, like the Fairy Godmother. She takes care of everything, she's strong, intelligent, she gives advice. She also believes in love and in second chances in life and that makes her such a good person to those who treat her well. She has the kind of character that makes you wanna meet her personally and be her friend. She's the link between the main characters and Sparks created with realism, meaning this that since the beginning of the story you know she's not perfect, you know she has weaknesses.
Nana parece às vezes a Fada Madrinha dos contos de fadas. Ela toma conta de tudo, ela é forte, inteligent, ela dá conselhos. Ela acredita no amor e nas segundas oportunidades na vida e isso faz dela uma pessoa bondosa para quem a trata bem. Ela tem um carácter que dá vontade de a conhecer pessoalmente e manter como amiga. Ela é o link entre as personagens principais e Sparks criou-a com realismo, não sendo de todo perfeita, mas sim humana, o que significa que no início da história já percebemos algumas fragilidades dela.
Ben
It's just so bad for me that we don't enter inside Ben's mind. I mean, it would be very interesting for me to know what he's thinking about some situations he's going through. Of course you get to know in by his actions and behavior, but I think Sparks could have written some chapters about his thoughts. I think in a way Ben is the most important character of this story. Not in the beginning, you know, but since he appears on the story. He's the main focus of the other characters. You get to known this kid as an intelligent one, kind, sweet and in a way he's shown as the perfect son for his mother and the worst son for his father. To me he is so mature and almost like an adult in a very young age. If we stay out of the stereotypes he's surrounded by, it's a good character for you to like. Even though he's almost a fairytale one.
Só acho que foi mau não entrar na mente do Ben, no livro. Acho que seria muito interessante conhecer o ponto de vista e os sentimentos dele. Claro que se percebe um bocado a maneira de ser, o que pensa e o que sente pelo que é descrito, mas acho que Nicholas Sparks podia ter escrito uns capítiulos sobre os pensamentos de Ben. Para mim, de certa forma, o Ben é a personagem mais importante da história. Não no princípio, mas desde que surge na história. Ele é o foco da atenção das outras personagens. Conhecemo-lo como uma criança inteligente, querida, amável e num certo sentido é mostrado como o filho perfeito para a mãe e o pior filho que o pai podia ter. Para mim ele é muito maduro e quase como um adulto numa idade muito curta. Se sairmos dos estereótipos que o rodeiam, é uma boa personagem para se gostar e sentir bons sentimentos. Embora ele seja quase uma personagem digna de contos de fadas.

Writing / Escrita
The Nicholas Sparks' writing is very simple. The chapters are really easy to read, the name of the chapter points out the character's point of view you're going to read (the narrator assumes a character's point of view in each chapter). That way we have the same plot seen through different perspectives and we understand the distinct points of view about each situation (I was hoping to see Ben's point of view, it would be extremely nice). Ever since a while the narrator gives his own opinion (is very critic towards Keith). I think that it's on the details that this book is a good piece and it's because of them that the story is attractive and the book has success. The fact that the story starts due to a photograph and the critics the narrator points out about Keith (besides showing the other character's critics) captivate and real in the reader.
A escrita de Nicholas Sparks é simples. Os capítulos são relativamente fáceis de ler, o nome do capítulo aponta para o ponto de vista da personagem que nos vai ser apresentada (o narrador assume um ponto de vista dos pensamentos dos personagens). Temos, assim, o plot visto de maneiras distintas e percebemos os diferentes pontos de vista das situações (tive pena de não ter visto o ponto de vista do Ben, acho que seria bastante interessante). De vez em quando o narrador vai dando a sua opinião (é muito crítico em relação a Keith). Acho que é nos detalhes que este livro ganha pontos e é por causa deles que a história atrai e o livro tem sucesso. O facto de ter criado uma história com capítulos curtos e linguagem simples não faz sucesso, mas o pormenor de toda a história surgir por uma fotografia e as críticas que o narrador lança nos capítulos do Keith (para além de o mostrar nas outras personagens) cativam e atraem o leitor.

So, what do I think about this book? If you like stories about love and the human strength of character, this a good story for you. If you already read Nicholas Sparks, it's good for you. If you don't, it's good for a start, if you forget about the stereotypes that I told you about. It's very easy to read and it's a catchy book. It's that kind of book that doesn't need that much of your brain to read it. And in the end, you'll get in love with the characters. That's what Nicholas Sparks did very well in this book.
O que é que eu penso deste livro? Se gostam de histórias sobre amor e força de carácter, esta é uma boa história para vós. Se já leram Nicholas Sparks e gostam, é bom para vós. Se não leram, é um bom começo, se colocarem de lado os esterótipos de que falei. É muito fácil de ler e prende-vos ao livro. É aquele tipo de livro que não necessita muito de esforço mental para ser lido. No fim, ficaram a gostar das personagens. É o que Nicholas Sparks fez mesmo bem neste livro.
